From Pineapple to Mushroom: The Future of Vegan Leather
Leather alternatives are no longer just "pleather". Discover the bio-materials changing fashion.
By Jan · January 25, 2026
The fashion industry is undergoing a revolution. Vegan leather has evolved far beyond cheap PVC. Today's alternatives are sustainable, durable, and often indistinguishable from the real thing.
The New Materials
- Pinatex: Made from pineapple leaf fibers. Lightweight, durable, and biodegradable.
- Mylo: Made from mushroom mycelium by Bolt Threads. Used by Stella McCartney and Adidas.
- Apple Skin: Made from juice industry waste in Italy. Soft and leather-like.
- Cactus Leather (Desserto): Made from nopal cactus. Requires minimal water to produce.
What to Look For
Not all vegan leather is created equal. PVC-based faux leather is cheap but harmful to the environment. Look for brands using bio-based materials or recycled polyester alternatives. Certifications like PETA-Approved Vegan and OEKO-TEX help identify quality options.
